Gary Slavinsky Wood Fired Stoneware and Porcelain
My dialogue with clay is about process and how the process of making informs me about myself and the world I live in. It amazes me that a lump of mud can be transformed into a functional form or used for sculptural expression which communicates to people about what they know, where they've been, how they feel or their aspirations.
I have an affinity for functional form and engage in the creation of both wheel thrown and hand built vessels. I’m particularly fond of using a combination of both methods in one piece. My vessels usually incorporate the use of created press molds based on themes I find in the natural world. I find that my work is most successful when it resonates with the possibility or suggests that it at one time belonged to a past culture or civilization for significant ritual purposes or for the celebration of food.
In addition to my quest for a message with clay I enjoy making work for the simple pleasure of how it enhances cooking and the dining experience. I choose the wood fired process solely because it is an extension of my finding experience when creating. The wood fire process is truly an exciting adventure with discovery and the unexpected which is one of the most valuable experiences of human existence.
